Brian Townsend’s Sinusoidal Online Poker Career & 2010 Downswing
|
First, let us clear the record. Here at instantpoker, we are huge Brian Townsend fans. We have followed him from his 2+2 years posting under aba20, to his Cardrunners fame and current resignation as lead poker instructor. According to high stakes DB, as of June 15th 2010, he is down roughly 2.5 million dollars for the calendar year. |

Brian Townsend Results Discussions
- Brian is arguably one of the top 3 No-Limit Texas Holdem player in the world, although his results have been more volatile than other pros. Brian had his share of million dollar months online, but the converse has also been true.
- Live, he had a notable session where we won 2 Million dollars in one weekend, mostly playing against Sam Farah at the Bellagio. Unfortunately, he proceeded to loose that and go on a 3 Million dollar downswing both live and online. The hand that triggered this downswing (and likely left a lasting mark on Brian) was a massive 7 digit pot he lost bluffing at the wrong time against Bobby Baldwin. This was a few years ago. Last year, things have been going well for Brian and he posted a +2.4 Million dollar year on Full Tilt Poker which is exceptional by any standard. This was mainly playing his game of choice, namely Heads Up PLO against world class competition. From his blog, as Brian looked back at the year prior.
Brian on his 2009 year (from his Cardrunners Blog):
2009 ended up being an amazing year for me despite a horrible end losing 700k in one session
Even with this session, which would have been a huge hit to most online players, Brian was still up in excess of 2.4 million dollars. A great year indeed, as he was one of the biggest winners on Full Tilt for the year.
Brian attributes his 2009 success to hard work:
I think I had an amazing year because I was really focused on improving my game. I spent countless hours working on improving my game.
2010 downswing
As of June 2010, Brian is down over 2 Million dollars online for the calender year. We think this downswing can be attributed to last year’s success, creating a “yo-yo” effect. The psychological effect of loosing most of your previous years earning can indeed be decimating.
What the future holds for Brian ?
Nothing but good things if you ask us. Going through these dark times and huge downswings in an evitable part playing the nosebleeds. Brian will mature through all these swings and come out an even better player. He has definitely shown us that he could stand the test of time. In our opinion, Brian has a ton of untapped potential both regarding his game and his ability to improve self-management. Stinger for example has better self management as he spends more time outside of the felt, and this means he always has a fresh mindset when he plays.
